History

Spartanburg County, as well as the city of Spartanburg (its county seat) was named in honor of the Spartan Regiment, a militia regiment that fought during the American Revolutionary War. The county was established in 1785, and was originally part of the Ninety-Six District. It was officially renamed to Spartanburg County in 1791, and included as part of the Pinckney District until 1800. In 1897, a portion of the county went on to form present-day Cherokee County.


During the American Revolutionary War, Spartan County (as it was known at the time) was the site of many battles, including the Battle of Cowpens, a pivotal battle led by Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, whose military tactics are renowned even today.

Downtown Spartanburg, which was recently recognized as a cultural district by the South Carolina Arts Commission, offers a myriad of cultural attractions, including music venues, fine art galleries, libraries and bookstores, museums, and fine dining restaurants.


Some of the finest cultural destinations you can find in Spartanburg County include the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Spartanburg Youth Theatre, the Spartanburg Art Museum, and the West Main Artists Co-op. You can also join the Artwalk, a free, monthly event that takes visitors on a tour of art galleries throughout downtown Spartanburg.
