History

Shumate, who had the vision of turning the area into a town, due to its close proximity to the train station. At the time, lots located within the planned business district sold for around $25 to $75 per acre.
Greer began to flourish in the 1950s, after early companies such as Homelite introduced new industries to the city, and new establishments such as schools and hospitals were built. The downtown area also began to grow during this time, thanks to visitors from Greenville and Spartanburg shopping at popular boutiques such as Smith & James, Miss Elise Fleming’s, and Miss Alta Cunninham’s.
